Imagine this gift under your tree this year:

  • A clean creative reset for next year.
  • The joy of an endless pool of writing inspiration
  • A workable creative system with repeatable, reliable success.

That’s what I’m giving you this Christmas.

In next months article, I’ll tell you how to do it in detail. But the production gift that December has laid in front of you right now is the key to unlocking it.

It takes no work, no planning. You can probably do it in your sleep. And it all boils down to this:

Every target your station sets for 2026 and your chances of hitting them will be based on one thing: how well you know who you serve.

We all think we know who this is. In my decade as a Creative Services writer/producer for K-LOVE and Air1 we had no shortage of data to make it clear. But when it came to disseminating numbers into copy with the power to actually change lives, I found we were missing what we really needed to know.

Demographics and data will tell you who your ILP is; your target listener or what I coined as your ‘avatar’, but only about as well as you know that kid you sponsor on the other side of the world. In Christian radio the job of a producer requires that we know our avatar…really know them, not like information on a sheet, but like the most important person on our gift list.

Not only does the job require it…it is literally a gift from God. If everyone in our lives is put there by God to know and learn to serve, how can a radio audience be any different? Where else but in Christian radio do you get the chance to learn to love like Christ loves us with every production order? That is the opportunity before you every day.

A little Quiz:

If you had to pick a personal, meaningful gift for your stations target listener right now, how many ideas spring to mind?

If you’re like most of us, it’s like…none.

It’s not because we don’t care, it’s because we simply don’t really know them.

How well we know WHO we serve drives HOW we serve & determines IF we hit or miss the mark. It decides not only how hard or easy it is to write copy but the level of success or failure of every creative idea we slave to create.

But here’s the gift that keeps on giving; right now, in every production session, on the air, at every event, you are being given more valuable information than any data service can collect. Every word from your audiences is telling you exactly who you served in 2025.

And it’s probably not who you think.

As you listen to those listener calls and interactions this month, compile a mental list of who your audience avatar is. Go beyond identifying ‘keywords’ that serve the station and get personal. They’re telling you exactly what they need from you…and what they value you for. And I don’t mean ‘hope’ or ‘inspiration’.

If you let them talk, the words they choose will tell you how deep or shallow your impact on their life actually is. But you have to go beyond listening for target phrases we’ve been trained to identify.

“I feel so inspired” may make you automatically check a box on your impact list for January. But let them continue and you may hear that it only happened that one time when they need it so much more. You’ll learn detail that easily separates out the ‘typical, categorizable’ calls from those with the potential to most deeply move other listeners too.

How we succeed in Christian radio is very similar to how we develop a great, lasting marriage. Some of our listeners will stay married to us even though we’re not that great to them. But our target listener – that avatar that determines the level of our success, she needs us to know her, to listen to her. To stop assuming we know what she wants and surprise her by knowing before she communicates it. And data will never do that.

When I developed the concept and system of a network avatar for K-Love and Air1, it wasn’t to be clever. It was to find an actionable path to reach the objective that the data just didn’t serve. It made sense to me that if I could find systematic ways to always be knowing our avatars better I could connect with them more easily and finally have the brain space to be more creative. I knew it would work. But I had no idea it would work so well that the guaranteed outcomes would launch it into an industry wide practice.

Still, I don’t see anyone taking advantage of the true power of ‘knowing thy avatar’. That’s why I’m going to give you a cheat sheet in January.

If you want your January reset to be the most attainable, actually enjoyable experience a New Years meeting can have test out what I give you in my January article. And ramp up the impact by doing this simple exercise right now:

Your December Power Plan

Every time you hear a listener call, drop, etc., imaging that person as the most important person on your gift list. Dig for details for gift ideas.

  1. Ignore demographics and life stages
  2. Dig for something you didn’t know
  3. Challenge your assumptions about what they like
  4. Look for the ‘why’ behind blanket statements
  5. Refuse to see them as a ‘sponsored child’

Put it on Auto Pilot

Every time you do this, ask yourself what else you need to know to pick the most personalized, meaningful gift just for them. You don’t even need to find an answer. Just doing this every time will neurologically create a system in your brain that begins to more efficiently ‘auto-dig’ for this kind of detail better than any AI. God really knew what He was doing when He built your brain.

December is offering you the gift of knowing who you really served in 2025 and how well. In January it allows us to identify how much we didn’t know & what we still need to learn. And that information is the scope that will bring 2026’s bullseye into laser sharp focus; making writing easy, creativity automatic and leveling up our production, our talent and all of our touch points with guaranteed success.

If you want to be more creative, it all starts with a system built on understanding your avatar. The more we know who we serve, the easier it is to know how to serve. When that becomes easier we finally have room for exploration, innovation and endless doorways to creativity.

Merry Christmas. Here’s to a New Year blessed with the God-honoring work He has set before you to enjoy.
